Valley
An exhibition of paintings by Robert Cunning
Opened on Saturday 3rd July, 3pm to 5pm. General opening: Sunday 4th July, 2pm to 5pm; thereafter every Thursday, Friday and Saturday until Saturday14th August, 2pm to 5pm.
Robert Cunning is a local artist and the hills and valleys of South Shropshire and Mid Wales have informed his paintings over the last 20 years. The distinctive shapes of the hills, sculpted by glaciers of the last Ice Age, and erosion by wind, water, ice and snow have led to their strange appearance. The Long Mynd in particular, which dominates the landscape of South Shropshire, has an ancient beauty in the steep cwms and high plateau of rock. The hills and valleys of Mid Wales have a remote beauty that is all the more awe inspiring because of their isolation and silence. The high waterfall and the surrounding hills, in the peaceful valley where St Melangell lived and has her shrine, provide strong subject matter for some of the paintings. Over many years Robert has used the substance of gesso (a chalk and glue mixture) to paint, engrave, embellish and to gild upon. It allows a smooth, flexible surface to be used for many forms of decoration. The paintings are made from panels of plywood that have been covered in canvas, and then many coats of gesso have been applied. The surface is then sanded smooth, prior to painting. The frames have a similar treatment, with the wood covered in gesso, and then decorated with paint and gold and silver leaf. Robert has two books published on gilding and framing.

Philosophy ~ The Forgotten Friend
A workshop led by Roger Kite
Philosophy is like an old friend we have lost touch with. Yet it is an important ally that can help us understand some of the challenging issues that face us. Philosophy cannot always give answers, but it can do something perhaps even more valuable: it can help us to think more clearly and ask better questions to put us in the best possible place to navigate a way through our problems. This day on Philosophy is in two parts. Firstly we will get to grips with philosophy; what it is, what it is for and how it works. Secondly we will do some philosophy together and by using it, try to steer our way through a particular problem. No prior knowledge or experience of philosophy is needed, just a willingness to listen and to share your views with others. Roger Kite is an experienced philosophy tutor who lives locally. Since retiring from university teaching he has put on many philosophy courses in Herefordshire and Powys.
Cost: £30 (concession available). Please bring a packed lunch. Soup, tea and coffee will be provided.
